LA CARAVANE DU ZOUBLISTAN (ZOUBLISTAN) - ACTION - CONCERT -PERFORMACE

The vast territories of Zoublistan are inhabited by musicians-healers, alchemists, constructors of instruments, meditating dancers and enlightened acrobats. Beliefs, rituals and still living tradition of ancestors are the only wealth of these nomadic tribes. Their hermetic culture, protected from contemporary radical influences established original and unique methods of artistic as well as spiritual development.

At the end of the twentieth century, the process of opening of Zoublistan to the outside world slowly began. The Wise Men of the United Provinces Circle started sending abroad numerous delegations to propagate the virtues of song, dance and music.

For these cultural ambassadors, each voyage and each meeting on their way is an occasion to share the unique property of their culture with other people. The rituals, ceremonies, sport events, stories and legends impress the audience anywhere they are presented.

SALTO (SZCZECIN) - CONCERT

Salto, is a duo established by brothers Łukasz and Mateusz Rychlickis (for several months the band played as a trio with Misza Rajchemba), the musicians known previously from the noise/post-rock band Kristen. Łukasz (Salto's guitar player) has recently begun cooperation with Raphael Rogiński, an eminent musician, composer and folklore researcher, while Mateusz (Salto's drummer) played in the punk'n'roll band Sojuz 3 and improvised music to silent movies. They played their first concert in autumn 2007 in the Galeria Arsenał at the opening of exhibition of Radek Szlaga's paintings. It is difficult to label the music they play as Salto - it is a resultant of free improvisation, short and taunt miniatures, minimalism, silence and noise. The reviewer of Diapazon, Polish jazz magazine wrote about their gig: The short set divided into several distinct parts, the duo mainly contrasts single, still guitar sounds with dense, restless percussion. Such combination worked really well, for the drummer played very attentively and - despite the fact he produced more sounds he didn't dominate his partner who perfectly and carefully contributed to the music...

THE AKHE THEATRE (RUSSIA) - "PLUG'N'PLAY" - PERFORMANCE

The new piece by the Akhe Theatre is, as usually, the unique combination of happening, fine arts, installation, video art and photography. They are often called a "Russian engineer theatre" or "optical theatre". The actors define themselves as "operators of scenic space". A very precise creation of reality - accomplished by means of stage design (or, to be precise, the props used on stage), lights, video projections and acting - is the most important in their performances. All those elements are tested by means of perverse interpretation of the laws of physics The dramatic action is replaced by logic sequence of images and situations. The Akhe Theatre artists are inventors of their own synthetic theatre: at the same time complex, subtle, effective and emotionally impressive.

False terrorist acts, involving the audience in the action, spontaneous dances in appropriate and inappropriate moments, chaos and nonsense - many of such elements typical to the Akhe Theatre have been included in "Plug-n-Play", an anarchistic "hooligan theatrical piece", a series of performances played against the background of fast, strong rhythmical music. A painter, a performer and a DJ perform next to each other, proving their excellent creativity and unlashed imagination.

THE AKADEMIA RUCHU THEATRE (WARSAW) - "CLEARLY. IN SILENCE" - THEATRICAL ACTION

The Akademia Ruchu Theare was established in 1973 in Warsaw by Wojciech Krukowski. It is known as a "theatre of behaviors", combining various disciplines, such us: theatre, visual arts, performance and film. The events of Akademia Ruchu are diverse, including indoor acts, actions, installations, performances, and interventions in a public space. Each of them is a specific "moral play" inducing a spectator/participant to think and change his/her attitude towards the contemporary commercialized world.

The action "Clearly. In Silence" is almost wordless performance taking place of both banks of the Odra River. By means of a sequence of cubic candle-lit lanterns, the actors of the "Akademia Ruchu" Theatre will invite the spectators to common, based on interplay of lights and senses, reflection on Szczecin - the city divided (connected?) by the river where various values and various spaces meet. The initially abstract forms of hundreds of cubes will turn into letters and finally into words, being a synthetic and symbolic dialogue with the place and time.

BAABA (WARSAW) - CONCERT + MOVIE

Baaba was established in 2000 since then the band has been experimenting ceaselessly and producing new pieces and CDs, such us: "Poope Musique", "Warszawa-Gdańsk", "Con Gas!", "Live from Alchemia" (DVD) and "Baaba w Akwarium" - each of them enthusiastically reviewed. Baaba is a part of Polish jazz scene yet it cannot be limited to one musical context. Their productions include jazz, jass, some hip hop, some rock, free-jazz, and electronic music . The band combines originality, sense of humor and perfect technical skills. Baaba plays gigs in Poland and abroad, in small venues, as as well as at big festivals,such as Warsaw Summer Jazz Days, Astigmatic, Les Nuits Europeeenes (Strasbourg), Terra Poland (Berlin), Unsound Festival (Minsk, Belarus), Off Festival. The stable concert lineup of the band consists of four musicians, yet the gig in Szczecin on July 2nd will be played by Baaba as a quintet. The concert will be accompanied by the projection of the 1929 Swedish/British 75-minute long silent movie "A Cottage on Dartmoor", a thriller directed by Anthony Asquith.
A typical English province, nice quiet people, neat cottages, a cinema, a hairdresser around the corner . A drama of a man in love who imaged too much. And of a hairdresser who did not understand him. A possessive love among the manicure tools and scissors.

ANDRZEJ BOJ WOJTOWICZ (BOROWICE) - "GROUP PORTRAIT" - PAINTING ACTION

Andrzej Boj Wojtowicz, a painter, graduated from Wrocław Academy of Fine Arts, longtime friend of the Kana Theatre's founder Zygmunt Duczyński, co-author of stage design to the Kana Theatre performances and designer of logos of the Kana Theatrical Centre. He does portraits, easel paintings, drawings, graphics, and performance, frescos, and interior designs of churches, residences and palaces. He runs individual artistic workshops. He is famous for his unconventional performative actions and projects dialoguing profoundly with literary and philosophical tradition.

His action titled "Group Portrait" is not the first attempt to "talk" with the Plac Grunwaldzki within the frames of the Bonds of Culture Festival. Plac Grunwaldzki is the place where some years before the Strefa Ciszy Theatre discovered a "beating heart of the city" and Willie Schulz heard "music of the city" last year. This time, intermingling portraits of particular people will result in creation of the "image of the city", showing its present time built from anonymous biographies and faces of its habitants.

THE STREFA CISZY THEATRE (POZNAŃ) - "DOMINO" - THEATRICAL ACTION

The Strefa Ciszy Theatre is one of the most important Polish alternative theatres directed to actions in open spaces, in accordance with the idea of an "urban theatre". The most acclaimed were such of their pieces as "Judasze", "Wodewil Miejski", "Postscriptum", "36,6", and "Nauka Latania". They performed many times at the Szczecin's Festival presenting their performances, as well as special happenings and street actions inspired by particular places ("Bitwy miejskie", "Punkt odniesienia"). At the 2008 edition of the "Bonds of Culture" they presented the show "Salto Mortale" prepared in collaboration with the Clipa Theatre from Israel.

The Strefa Ciszy Theatre created their own characteristic style of theatrical activities focused on interactive relation between spectators and actors and treatment of urban space and social life as a "stage" of lucid feast. Their first street interventions were accomplished in the early 1990's, in the heyday of outdoor theatre in Poland, when Polish audience rediscovered and enthusiastically enjoyed possibility of peaceful public gatherings. Urban reality of last two decades radically changed, and street theatre is now challenged to redefine its hitherto forms of activity in public space.

The theatrical action DOMINO is an attempt to challenge the urban element and to answer the question about the role of contemporary theatre of intervention.

THE RONDO THEATRE (SŁUPSK) - "HANDLE WITH CARE" - THEATRICAL ACTION

The starting point of the action is all-embracing economical crisis. In recent months many companies have been dissolved or heavily reduced, including Polish shipyards - a symbol of political changes of 1989. In the place very significant to Szczecin, on the corner of Niepodległości Ave. and Obrońców Stalingradu St. - next to the construction site of a shopping mall which is to be located where the ODRA clothing factory and the PLECIUGA puppet theatre used to be located - the container for workers will be put, the site of the action prepared by the group of Ludomir Franczak.

Ludomir Franczak is an artist active in many fields: theatre, performance, design, graphics, painting, installation, video art). In his activities he tries to discover reference points to both artistic and social reality, doing it in a perverse and surprising way. He was a co-founder of the group "Ostatni Człowiek na Ziemi" ("The Last Man of the Earth") and the Teatr Mody 3 cm (Theatre of Fashion 3 cm). Currently involved in the Słupsk-based Rondo Theatre.

WERONIKA FIBICH (KANA THEATRE - SZCZECIN) - "REMOVAL" - THEATRICAL ACTION

Each city reflects spatial expression of time, constant network of transforming spatial/social qualities. Observation of such changes of urban organism enables us to learn and understand interrelations between space and time. It is crucial to know the 'genetic code' necessary to reconstruct and develop urban tissue, its structure and particular elements. What is the nature of this genetic code of the city? Where is this record of information stored: in human beings, in geographic situation, or in natural surrounding?

The project is another undertaking of the Kana Theatre Association within the series of "quests for identity of the place". The series, organized in the form of independent projects, combines research, documentary and artistic activities inspired by the past and the present of Szczecin, as well as its architecture, showing forgotten and ignored areas of the city's topography - the result their painful and ambiguous history, typical to borderland regions.

Here the newly inhabited houses preserve smells of their former habitants for a long time, and mattresses on beds stubbornly show imprinted shapes of their previous owners, just like foxed photographic negatives. There are no maps, no signs of childhood, always remembered pear trees planted by ancestors from time immemorial, old neighbours, quarrels about inherited land. There is nothing. Nothing to preserve.  Only a mouldy memory of conventional character of borders kept on the top shelf, in the cellar, like preserves of foreign recipe. And almost forgotten fear - of something to come and something that already came.

This time we are focused on Niebuszewo - the district once inhabited by the Jews, after 1945 the place shared by many displaced persons of various nationalities. The first stage of the project included collecting documents, meetings with former and contemporary habitants, gathering objects, searching for authentic testimonies of the epoch. The artistic action presented at the "Bonds of Culture" Festival will be the story of particular biographies from the past and the present of the place.

ARTI GRABOWSKI (CRACOW) - FROM THE SERIES "READ ME, MUM": THE HUNT FOR THE RED OCTOBER - PERFORMANCE

One of the most famous Polish performers of young generation. Graduated from the Krakow's Fine Arts Academy, where he is currently employed as an assistant on the Performance Studio of the Intermedia Faculty. He accomplished over one hundred events defined as "performances", "happenings", "actions" presented at performance, theatre and video art festivals all over the world. For several years he collaborated with the Poznań-based "Porywacze ciał" Theatre.

"Read Me, Mum" is the Arti Grabowski's series of performances perversely referring to works of popular literature. The author, by means of his provocative and sometimes extreme actions, puts them in new contexts and establishes direct relation with the audience. The sensational plot of "The Hunt for the Red October" is a starting point to show a situation of a human being under increasing pressure, with all consequences of ambiguity of that concept.

THE DAKH THEATRE (UKRAINE) - "GOGOL´S DEATH"- PERFORMANCE

The Dakh Theatre is an experienced group of independent Ukrainian artists active on the borderland between theatre and music, and accomplishing culture-forming projects. Their work is focused on seeking contemporary forms of interpreting classical themes through establishing a living dialogue with tradition. They are authors of the "Mystic Ukraine" project, including various formally surprising performances filled with traditional Ukrainian music based on, among others, dramatic works of William Shakespeare.

Their performance titled "Gogol's death" refers to artistic output and biography of Nikolai Gogol. This is a dark, poetic theatre of strong visual and sonic expression - their performances are accompanied by live music including some elements of Ukrainian folk songs. Modest lights, whispers, singing, raw sounds of instruments and splash of water create a stirring and disturbing vision of death.

The works of Dakh, both avant-garde and sacred, strive for "dynamic synthesis" of actor's craft and creating artistic visions corresponding with "inner cosmos" of a human being. The theatre also seeks the roots of Ukrainian identity.

ATSUSHI TAKENOUCHI (JAPAN) - "JINEN" - PERFORMANCE

Atsushi Takenouchi - a Japanese dancer and choreographer. He invented his original style of dance - the JINEN butoh, named after Japanese Jinen fields - while traveling between 1996-99, visiting Japanese villages, remnants of forgotten Buddhist temples and sanctuaries. Several performances were created in result of his quests - for last seven years he has been accomplishing the idea of "dancing with places" - he has visited several places, among others France, Austria, Great Britain, the U.S., Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Poland, organizing workshops, presenting performances and big international outdoor artistic projects. Besides dancing he is interested in drawing.

Hiroko Komiya - creates experimental music, using sounds taken from nature. He uses, among others, a collection of instruments of magical sound, such as shells, bells, rattles, clappers, tinware, and specially selected traditional instruments. She treats her own organic voice as one of the instruments, too. In that was she creates non-harmonic musical improvisations, probing archetypes of Oriental culture, and providing extraordinary soundtrack to performances, improvisations and workshops.

"Jinen" is based on improvised movement, inspired by time, space, architecture, energy of the audience, past, present and spiritual dimension of the place where the performance is presented. It will be an intimate conversation of two Japanese artists with the space of Szczecin's Łasztownia, with the past events inscribed in the walls of decaying buildings, with the sound heard in silence...

WAGOGO MIRUNGU (TANZANIA) - CONCERT

The Wagogo Mirungu band consists of nine musicians from ethic group Wagogo (or Gogo) from central Tanzania. The Wagogo tribe is known from often use of music in many cultural situations, especially rituals being a means of communication between the living members of their culture and gods; Mirungu. Pleasing Mirungu by sacrifices and venerating them while singing and dancing is very beneficial.

Musicians/dancers will present some ceremonies including ritual invocation of gods/spirits/ancestors, asking them to protect the musical instruments they are performing on, the performers themselves, the audience attending the Bonds of Culture Festival. The audience will hear and see, among others, 'Masasi', performed by young boys as the last stage in the process of the male initiation school, 'Mlokwe' is the celebration dance that thanks the gods for allowing people to perform music and dance, and 'Nyumba ya mganga' - a dance-song asking the Mirungu to remove a bad spirit. The musicians will use such instruments as the Wagogo felimbe flute, string instruments, various kinds of zeze, ilimbas and horns.

BESTER QUARTET (CRACOW) - CONCERT

The Bester Quartet (former The Cracow Klezmer Band) gained fame as one of most creative and innovative musical groups from Poland. The band, established in 1997, creates and brilliantly performs compositions on the verge of jazz, avant-garde, classical and klezmer music. The Bester Quartet brilliantly combines ecstatic, trance-inducing elements of Jewish musical tradition with free improvisation to create dynamic avant-garde chamber music, fully aware of its roots. All records of the Bester Quartet have been issued by the prestigious NYC label Tzadik, established by an eminent composer and multi-instrumentalist John Zorn who highly estimated the group. Zorn invited the quartet to arrange and perform his own compositions inspired by life and work of Polish-Jewish writer Bruno Schulz - recorded and issued as a critically acclaimed CD "Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass". The group collaborated also with Tomasz Stańko, Grażyna Auguścik, John McLeanem, Don Byron and Frank London.

The Bester Quartet is famous for its enchanting and energetic concerts. The band played in many prestigious venues and musical clubs in the world, made countless recordings for TV and radio stations, yet paradoxically it is still more known abroad than in Poland.

The change of the quartet's name in 2007 was the result of growing difficulties with labeling their music as a purely "klezmer". Despite that change, the band's lineup remains stable, including four classically educated musicians:

THE NOWY THEATRE (LODZ) "AT THE VERGE OF THE WORLD" -PERFORMANCE

Who are the characters? They came from the texts, or from life of Malcolm Lowry. He actually completed just one book - "Under the Volcano" - and some short stories and unfinished texts published after his suicidal death. He dreamed about great literary corpus titled "Never-ending journey", he dreamed about mythical Eden. The group of young actors takes their audience for such a journey made of fragments of his texts and their original imagination. They create unique musical "wandering theatre" on the verge of various forms.

Asked about its genre, about a defined theatrical area one could only spread one's arms helplessly. The director called it rightly "a humble musical performance". It was orchestrated for four actors, with minimum stage design and props as if taken from a poor circus or a scrap yard. It shares a magic-nostalgic mood with Fellini's films and "Cabaret" by Bob Fosse - the movie telling a sad story in a clownish disguise. Singing announcers storytellers accompany the protagonists on their way the dreamed quiet haven. However, at the same time they break the rules of the presented world and manifest its conventionality. The performance bears some similarities with "Człowiek wózków" by Mariusz Malec and other movies presenting a human life - small and unimportant yet significant to its heroes - in a metaphor of a crippled journey with a shaky vehicle.

RASSEGNA (FRANCE) - CONCERT

The band will present songs of colorful and exuberant cultural mixture of Mediterranean region. The project gathers musicians from Corsica, Naples, Algeria, France, Spain and Macedonia. Their music is a very interesting attempt of synthesis of musical trends, mutually infiltrating and influencing each other in the Mediterranean Sea basin for centuries, free from political and historical conditionings. The foundation of the group is the quest for common elements of seemingly distant musical tradition - common Mediterranean cultural identity. The international group arranges musical pieces in their own style yet respecting their specifics and separate color. The concert will contain Arab, Andalusia and Corsican motifs, flamenco, prayer songs, Sephardic ballads and Balkan rhythms, dances, wedding and love songs performed with typical Southern energy.

THE ANTAGON THEATRE (GERMANY) - "GINKGO" - PERFORMANCE

Words of Omar Valino: Theatre is not violence but rather erosion. It acts like water or wind, almost invisibly shaping ever-changing face of the Earth are the artistic credo of the German group Antagon theaterAKTion, famous for their large-scale outdoor projects. The title of their most recent outdoor performance, "Ginkgo", refers to the name of the species of Japanese tree who grew in Hiroshima exactly on the spot where the atom bomb exploded in 1945. The performance show a futuristic reality of a group of people fighting for survival and rediscovering the enormous power coming from affirmation the very sources and origins of life. The performance is very spectacular, constructed as a series of fast changing images of surprising scale, dynamics, but also poetic vision. The plot is built around a huge installation, the actions are accompanied by special pyrotechnic effects and live music.

The Antagon theaterAKTion uses elements of a motion theatre (including Butoh dance theatre), acrobatics, improvisations with modern 3-D installations, multimedia projections and sound effects. For that group of over 20 artists, theatre is in the first place the way to seek the answer for existential questions, and a heroic attempt to influence the reality.

Workshops of ritual dances and songs from Zoublistan and rhythm workshops based on group improvisation. The workshops are open to all participants - no special training needed, there are no age limits.

WAGOGO MIRUNGU

Workshop of African dance

Dance taught by the Tanzanian artists originates from southern uplands of Tanzania, inhabited by the Wayao ethnic group. It is a dance of a special festive character, combined with art of storytelling, mime and singing. The workshop for people interested in dance.

Drumming workshop

Teaching of various Tanzanian drumming traditions. The members of the band can also present basic techniques of playing on limba and various African string instruments. The workshop for people experienced in playing drums. The participants are asked to bring their instruments.

The Workshop "Painting with the Spirit"

The workshop teaching concentration and opening to silence and oneself as the foundations of painting. Directed to the youth, no previous painting experience needed.

MARIA STAFYNIAK AND PAWEŁ KULA

Photography workshops

The workshops focus on phenomena that resulted in invention of photography and film. The leaders of workshop will take us for a trip to the past to learn how photographs and animated films were made almost two hundred years ago. We will try to draw a picture using a small mirror and lenses; we will see the world upside down in the pinhole camera. The workshop for children 8 to 15 year old.

"TRANSKULTURA" PROJECT

The "Transkultura" is a common initiative of the Kana Theatrical Centre from Szczecin, Poland, and the schloss broellin e.V. in Broellin, near Pasewalk, Germany. The project offers to Poles and Germans a possibility of participation in cultural events on both sides of the border. On July 4th, special coaches will be provided to take the local habitants of Pommerania to the final day of the Festival "Bonds of Culture" (the Polish route: Czaplinek, Złocieniec, Drawsko Pomorskie, Węgorzyno, Chociwel, Szczecin; the German route: Greifswald, Anklam, Ückermünde, Eggesin, Torgelow, Pasewalk, Löcknitz, Szczecin).

There will be three day workshops organized within the "Transkultura" Project, including such issues as dramaturgy of theatrical activities, directing, stage design, choreography, sound, stage constructions, work group and expression led by the experts from Poland and Germany. The event will be followed by the Partnership Meeting of cultural organizations and animators of culture from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Western Pomerania.

SPECIFIC SITE SEEING - INTERDYSCYPLINARY WORKSHOP FESTIVAL - SCHLOSS BROELLIN

There will be seven artistic groups working in the Schloss Broellin between 17 and 30 August 2009. They are going to practically challenge the issue of space as an element of staging and as a central area of interest in their own work. The invited groups will attempt to approach the subject, present various points of view, use specifics of the space to test and develop their own methods of work. The following groups will take part: Büro für Zeit + Raum & Anne Hirth, Dr. Maren Witte, IPtanz, Ilona Pászthy, Grotest Maru, Theater Aspik, lunatiks produktion, written-not-written.

SCHLOSS BROELLIN - INTERNATIONAL CENTRE OF ARTISTIC RESEARCH

The Schloss Broellin is an internationally acclaimed centre accomplishing activities for the field of contemporary dance, theatre and interdisciplinary projects.
